How to Remove an Old Honeywell Thermostat
Welcome back to my channel! I'm Ostenako, and today I'm going to show you how to remove an ancient Honeywell thermostat. If your thermostat looks like it belongs to a bygone era, follow along to see how I tackled this task.
Step-by-Step Guide:
Identify the Components:
The thermostat has two main parts: the faceplate and the backplate. The faceplate is the visible part with the Honeywell logo, while the backplate is the part attached to the wall.
Remove the Faceplate:
Start by snapping off the faceplate. You may need to use a box cutter to cut the paint around the backplate if it’s fused to the wall.
Locate and Remove the Screws:
Once the faceplate is off, you’ll see the backplate, which is usually held in place by screws. My thermostat had two screws, but yours might have more or fewer.
Find a screwdriver that fits. I had to use a hand screwdriver because my drill wasn’t narrow enough.
Safety First:
Before you begin, ensure that the power to the electric box and furnace is turned off. This is crucial to avoid any electrical hazards.
Unscrew the Backplate:
Carefully unscrew the left and right screws. The wires will be attached to the back of the backplate.
Handle the Wires:
Gently pull out the backplate to reveal the wires. Be cautious not to rip them out. You might need to wiggle it a bit to loosen it from the wall.
Document the Wiring Setup:
Take a picture or video of the wiring setup before disconnecting anything. This step is vital for reference if you need to reinstall the old thermostat or troubleshoot the new one.
Label the Wires:
Use the labels that came with your new thermostat to mark each wire. If your new thermostat doesn’t come with labels, use Post-its or tape to mark them. This will be useful for future reference.
Prepare for Issues:
Be prepared for potential issues with the wiring or the new thermostat. For instance, my new thermostat didn’t work due to the wiring setup, so I had to switch to one that didn’t require a C wire.
Final Steps:
After labeling the wires and ensuring the power is off, unscrew the wires from the old thermostat. Now, you are ready to install the new thermostat.
By following these steps, you can safely and effectively remove your old Honeywell thermostat. If you run into any issues, feel free to comment, and I’ll be happy to assist you. Don’t forget to subscribe to my channel for more helpful tutorials!
