How to DIY Highlights at Home Using a Cap | Naturally Curly Hair | Men Edition | ION Blonde 9NN
Hello, everyone! I’m Ostenako, and today I’m going to show you how to do DIY highlights at home using a cap, specifically for men with naturally curly hair. I’ve been growing my hair out for over a year, and it’s time to switch things up with some highlights. I’ll be using the ION Blonde 9NN for this process. Let’s dive in!
Step 1: Prepare Your Hair and Materials
Materials Needed:
Highlighting cap and hook
Hair color kit with bleach and developer (ION Blonde 9NN)
Gloves
Mixing bowl and brush
Step booster (optional)
Conditioner
Shower cap or plastic wrap
Preparation:
Assess Your Hair: If your hair is naturally curly, like mine (3B/3C type), make sure it’s clean and dry. Avoid using silicone-based products as they can suffocate your hair and cause breakage.
Plan Your Highlights: Decide where you want the highlights to be. I recommend focusing on framing your face and adding dimension to your curls.
Step 2: Using the Highlighting Cap
Put on the Cap: Place the highlighting cap snugly on your head. Make sure it’s tight enough to stay in place but not too tight to be uncomfortable.
Pull Out the Hair: Using the hook, pull small sections of hair through the holes in the cap. Be patient and gentle, especially with curly hair, to avoid breakage. Aim for an even distribution but don’t worry about being too precise—natural variation looks great.
Step 3: Mixing and Applying the Bleach
Mix the Bleach: Follow the instructions on your bleach kit. Typically, it’s a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio of bleach to developer. For this tutorial, I’m using a 40-volume developer to achieve a high lift.
Apply the Bleach: Start applying the bleach mixture to the hair you pulled through the cap. Begin at the back and work your way to the front. Ensure all strands are thoroughly coated.
Pro Tip: If your hair is very curly, consider mixing a step booster into the bleach to protect your hair during the process.
Processing Time: Leave the bleach on for the recommended time, usually around 30-50 minutes. Check the progress regularly to avoid over-processing.
Step 4: Rinse and Tone
Rinse the Bleach: Once the desired lift is achieved, rinse your hair thoroughly with cool water. Keep the cap on during rinsing to avoid spreading the bleach to other parts of your hair.
Tone the Highlights: Apply the ION Blonde 9NN toner to neutralize any brassy tones. Mix the toner with a 10-volume developer and apply it evenly to the bleached sections. Leave it on for about 20-30 minutes.
Final Rinse: Rinse out the toner and remove the cap. Follow up with a deep conditioner to restore moisture and elasticity to your hair.
Step 5: Styling and Maintenance
Condition and Style: After rinsing out the toner, apply a leave-in conditioner and style your hair as usual. I use a combination of water, shea butter, and my homemade hair product for styling.
Maintain Your Highlights: To keep your highlights looking fresh, avoid silicone-based products and use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Deep condition regularly and use protein treatments as needed.
