DIY Extreme Dresser + Nightstand Makeover From Antique to Modern Outdated Furniture Transformation
DIY Transformation: Revamping Antique Nightstands and Dresser
Hello everyone! Welcome back to my channel. Today, I’m sharing my first DIY project in ages. I transformed old, antique nightstands and a dresser into something visually appealing and functional. Let's dive into the process.
Prepping for the Makeover
Initial Cleaning:
I started by cleaning the nightstands and dresser with a multi-purpose cleaner to remove any dirt and grime.
It's important to remove the hardware before painting. Use a screwdriver or drill to unscrew handles and knobs and keep them in a safe place.
Materials Used:
Primer
Paint (acrylic-based)
Polyurethane
Brushes and foam rollers from Dollar Tree
Sanding block from Dollar Tree
Primer Application:
Apply a layer of primer to all surfaces. This helps the paint adhere better and prevents the original color from showing through.
Ensure even coverage, especially if you’re transitioning from dark wood to a lighter color.
Painting the Furniture
Sanding the Primer:
After the primer dries, sand it down to a smooth finish to remove any brush strokes and ensure an even surface for painting.
First Coat of Paint:
Use a 4-inch foam roller for larger surfaces and a brush for corners and edges.
The first coat might look uneven, but it's important to let it dry thoroughly before applying additional coats.
Subsequent Coats:
Apply at least two more coats of paint for full coverage. Let each coat dry completely before applying the next one.
Working on the Dresser
Dresser Preparation:
Remove hardware and clean the surface.
Prime the dresser and let it dry completely.
Painting the Dresser:
Apply the first coat of paint using the same method as the nightstands. Ensure even coverage and address any drips immediately.
Apply two more coats for a smooth, opaque finish.
Finishing Touches with Polyurethane
Sanding Before Sealing:
Lightly sand the painted surfaces to smooth out any imperfections before applying the polyurethane.
Applying Polyurethane:
Use a water-based polyurethane for a clear, matte finish.
Apply three coats, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next one. This protects the paint and gives a durable finish.
Final Assembly:
Reattach the hardware once the polyurethane is fully dry.
Add any final decorative touches, such as a mirror or plants, to enhance the aesthetic.
Final Reveal
The transformation was a success! The once dull and outdated furniture now looks bright, modern, and elegant. The white paint opened up the room and gave it a fresh look. This project was a fun and rewarding experience, and I hope it inspires you to tackle your own DIY furniture makeover.
